Extending Kindness and Compassion to Yourself

Often, we are our own harshest critics. We hold ourselves to impossibly high standards and readily berate ourselves for perceived failures or shortcomings. Learning to treat ourselves with the same kindness and understanding we would offer a friend is a crucial first step towards a more compassionate life. Here’s how you can cultivate self-compassion:

  • Practice Self-Awareness: Pay attention to your inner dialogue. Notice when you are being critical or judgmental towards yourself. Acknowledge these thoughts without getting carried away by them.
  • Acknowledge Your Shared Humanity: Remember that everyone makes mistakes, experiences difficulties, and feels inadequate at times. You are not alone in your struggles. This understanding can soften self-criticism.
