The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is launching a major fundraising campaign to save Bridge 42, the iconic Grade II listed bridge spanning the River Murk Esk since 1846.

After nearly 200 years and 10,000 train crossings annually, urgent repairs to its stone and brickwork are needed for safe operation.

The railway aims to raise at least Β£800,000, with over Β£130,000 already secured thanks to strong community support.

Temporary propping will keep the bridge in service during the 2026 season, ensuring no service interruptions while detailed restoration plans are finalized for winter 2026/27.

NYMR Director Phil Sash and CEO Laura Strangeway stress the bridge’s crucial role and the importance of community backing.

Alongside Bridge 42, the railway is also fundraising Β£200,000 to restore the classic Green Knight steam engine.

Every donation helps safeguard this cherished local heritage for future generations.

Captain James Cook – From Great Ayton to the Wide Blue World

On the edge of the North York Moors, where heather trembles in the wind and skylarks stitch song into the sky, stands a monument to a lad who once gazed beyond the hills and wondered what lay further still.

Captain James Cook may have charted distant oceans, but his story begins in the modest village of Great Ayton.

Born in 1728, Cook spent his formative years among these gentle fields. His father worked the land; young James walked it.

There is something fitting in that an explorer first learning the lay of furrows before the lay of continents.

Today, visitors can step into his early world at the Captain Cook Schoolroom Museum, a humble building that whispers of ink pots, slate boards, and ambition quietly kindled.

Climb Easby Moor and you’ll find the obelisk erected in his honour. Stand there on a clear day and the view rolls on toward the coast.

One can almost imagine the boy he once was, squinting eastward, sensing a horizon that would one day bear his name across maps and history books.

Yet for all his voyages, Cook’s beginnings remain deeply Yorkshire rooted, practical, resilient.

His life reminds us that even the widest journeys can spring from the smallest villages, and that curiosity, once sparked, can carry a person far beyond familiar hills.

As the wind sweeps across the moor and stone meets sky, we are reminded: greatness often begins with a simple question and a sturdy pair of boots.

Which famous ship did Captain James Cook command on his first voyage to the Pacific?
Answer at the bottom!

Our Brains Can Filter Out Unnecessary Information

In a world buzzing louder than a market day in full swing, it’s reassuring to know our brains are built with a remarkable skill: filtering. Much like separating wheat from chaff, your mind constantly decides what deserves attention and what can drift quietly by.

Here’s how to support that natural ability:

  1. Single-task with intention – Focus on one activity at a time. Close extra tabs (both digital and mental) and give your attention fully to the task at hand.

  1. Create gentle boundaries – Schedule β€œquiet hours” free from notifications. Even 30 minutes of uninterrupted calm can sharpen clarity.

  1. Write it down – Jot lingering thoughts in a notebook. Once captured, they stop clamouring for attention.

  1. Step into nature – A short walk on the moors or along the coast allows your brain to reset and prioritise naturally.

  1. Sleep generously – Quality rest strengthens cognitive filtering and memory consolidation.

Your mind is not meant to carry everything at once. Let it choose wisely.

  • The Yorkshire County Cricket Club, founded in 1863, remains one of the most successful cricket clubs in England’s history.

  • Whitby jet, formed from ancient fossilised wood, became highly fashionable in Victorian jewellery, especially after Queen Victoria wore it during her mourning period.

"In the depths of darkness, let the light of compassion guide your way. Even the smallest act of kindness can spark a flame of hope that illuminates the path for others to follow. Embrace the power of unity and let your actions resonate with the echoes of lasting inspiration."
