The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is launching a major fundraising campaign to save Bridge 42, the iconic Grade II listed bridge spanning the River Murk Esk since 1846.
After nearly 200 years and 10,000 train crossings annually, urgent repairs to its stone and brickwork are needed for safe operation.
The railway aims to raise at least £800,000, with over £130,000 already secured thanks to strong community support.
Temporary propping will keep the bridge in service during the 2026 season, ensuring no service interruptions while detailed restoration plans are finalized for winter 2026/27.
NYMR Director Phil Sash and CEO Laura Strangeway stress the bridge’s crucial role and the importance of community backing.
Alongside Bridge 42, the railway is also fundraising £200,000 to restore the classic Green Knight steam engine.
Every donation helps safeguard this cherished local heritage for future generations.
